Love Thy Locks

Mama? Why do I look this way?

Why is my hair not

straight, smooth, or flow when I sway?

Instead it curls and gets caught

in combs and brushes every day.

It is because you forgot

to take care of it they say.

If maybe I cut out the knots

and go to the beauty shop they

could style it for me, so I thought.

My mother replied in a beautiful way,

Your hair is spiraled that's why it gets caught.

Too amazingly complex to have it just lay,

straight and still as if taught.

It swims like fishes and swishes like waves.

Like a forest that grows and grows. Why stop?

You wish to cut off the life that it has made?

I take care of it, though they say I forgot,

I've nurtured and cared for you in a way

that you're loved, not by what you got,

but by your benevolence. Now go play.
