Luke's Lion

My cousin’s stuffed animals

lives on my top bunk now.

It survived his reckless childhood

thoroughly worn and tattered

with faded colors

yet, still in one piece.

It takes me back to terrifying nights

of childhood night terrors.

It would comfort me

when nothing else could.

It is the best cuddle-er to this day.

Now, it waits on my top bunk

awaiting my return.

Whenever I take down the lion,

a thousand heart-harming memories rush forth.

Once more, I see Luke’s innocent face

whispering, careful not to wake me,

“Wherever you miss me, hug Simba.

            I’ll always love you”
