Lullaby of Lies
As the night is drawn around us,
Tell me it will be okay.
I know you have no way to know,
But tell it to me anyway -
Sing your lullaby of lies;
Dry my tears and quell my cries.
Tell me that you will protect me,
Though I know that you cannot.
Just quiet all my fears of anguish;
Tell me cruelty can be fought.
Sing your lullaby of lies,
Knight enough in your disguise.
Yes, I know, it will not help me,
Yes, I know, I still am lost,
But right now I desire such comfort
As may justify the cost.
Sing your lullaby of lies;
Hide the evil I despise.
All around, the earth is breaking,
All around, the kind are dead,
But still at night I seek this safety,
Sleep unknowing in my bed.
Sing your lullaby of lies;
Say the sun will never rise.
Am I wrong to seek this comfort?
Is it cruel to flee despair?
Forgive me that I shirk my burden,
Though it is the lightest share.
Sing your lullaby of lies;
Hold me as the world dies.
Kiss me, make my woes forgotten,
Drown me in your hollow word,
I beg you, cut me, kill me, make me
Lose all sense of what occurred.
Sing your lullaby of lies;
Give me hope in my demise.
Tell me as my blood is ebbing,
As my wounds are running dry,
That once my veins are finally empty,
No one else will need to die.
Sing your lullaby of lies,
And gently, gently shut my eyes.
