Machines

When I was small

My friends were machines

Nintendo, Sega, Playstation

Opened up entirely new worlds for me

People and places I had never imagined

Suddenly were right there

And I embraced them with gusto

I am older now

Still I consider the machines my friends

They foster a new kind of creativity

The kind you can interact with

And it is still a thing to behold

To look at and say, "This is good."

But there is a problem

The worlds that these machines produce are becoming stagnant

The men with the money

Make the decisions

That wittle down every brilliant idea

Into another shooting gallery

Maybe that isn't a tragedy to you

I can understand how someone would be confused

Why does he care?

They're just video games

But to me, for a very long time, they have been something more

There is a soul to these things

And when you connect with it

Really connect with it

You care about it because it is unique

It is a product of how far we have come

There is something in it that we have yet to really understand

One job could change my life

Being able to direct

The flow of that industry

To reward creativity

Rather than smash it for profit

I want to change my life

But even more than that

I want to change those worlds

And my friends

To bring back the magic of it

Before it drowns in mediocrity

All I need is that one chance

And I know I can make something beautiful

I know I can help my friends
