Maiden-in-Waiting
He knows my fears
And he calls them out as if exorcising my demons
I try to put distance between us
But he walks farther, walks closer
Ever lonesome, he feels my loneliness
And senses my need for someone’s presence in my life
I tell him I am not free; somebody loves me
But he says he has never loved until now
I can’t tell him I love him; I don’t know how
But he tells me it is on my face, my traitorous face
I offer that there is someone else he can love
But he asks me for her name
Now I’m stuck with feelings flourished
My love is under the surface, waiting to be unburied
The one who has come is waiting to be elsewhere
But I am still here; the Maiden in Waiting
