Make Me Proud

Dear 9-year-old Grace,

So you’re moving.
I know you’re upset and angry with your parents.
I know it feels like the whole world is imploding
and all you want to do is disappear. I get it.
It will take a while for you to settle into the new house.
As the clock ticks on, you will slowly forget the past.
You will gradually become a new person.
Don’t even get me started on the people you’ll meet.
I could warn you about him or tell you not to trust her,
but I wouldn’t be helping you if I did that.
This is your journey, Grace. Your life. A fresh start.
Do with it what you will. Make me proud.

Sincerely,
17-year-old Grace
