Mama, Mama

Mama Mama, tell me I'm pretty Mama mama, tell me I don't need their pity Mama mama, help me to agree, Mama mama tell me you love me Tell me you love me because I can't love myself Daily I find myself Tugging at hair that refuses to yield Pressing at wounds that refuse to be healed Wishing for a depth in contour, Plateaus of cheekbones traced with longing fingers Ridiculed by the mirror that mockingly magnifies microscopic marks Getting ready for school in the morning is no walk in some park Eyes are twitching Fingers are gripping Tears in my eyes are furiously dripping Clarity in my vision is rapidly slipping Picking at pock marks like pre schoolers going after cookies In the business of the breathtaking, I feel like a rookie Mama, you made me, say I'm beautiful, PLEASE But even when you do, the feelings never cease Flashing screens around me spreading perfectionism like a disease The flawless supermodel pose The new and current set of clothes Flat toned stomachs and jawline sharp Faces like canvases drawn with art If Hollywood is a titan Media is a reckless snake I'm constricted in its iron grip Running out of air But I can't catch my breath Just catching the trends I look at myself and further the frown bends I see black holes of eyes A smile a bit too wide Serving as a clever disguise Thighs that spread easily into chairs An asymmetrical face framed with spilt hairs Mama who bore me, Send me a sign Bring back the innocence that used to be mine I don't see rich colours in eyes that gleam I don't see an easy grin, that's stuff of a dream Why do they hold us to these standards? We are living in our fears Pop! Goes the pressure building in my ears How long will we go on this way? Fruitlessly fixing flaws that fake our freedom It all seems to come down to unimportant features Denying the truth in us creatures So mama, please Help us out Nourish the children in this love deprived drought Tell us you love us Faithful and true Please put up with us the whole way through Stay until the giants fall Then maybe one day we won't feel so small.
