Manufactured Pop Star

I am a successful pop star but that doesn't seem to be enough

Bubble gum pop has sold me a lot of records but has also made me throw up in disgust

I am made to feel embarassed at this latest record label photo shoot

When my musical peers see me holding this oversized lolipop they will think I am a total goof

I have had a few hit records that made it to the top of the charts

But they have more style than substance because I am a Manufactured Pop Star

I do write my own material but my record label won't give it a chance

So to continue to have a career, I have to perform their song and dance

I just want people to know that I can be a serious artist as well

But my record label doesn't want my original material, they say it will never sell

I am serious artist and I have something important to say

But conforming to the record label's created image of me, always gets in the way

I have had a successful career so far, I have made it to the top of the charts

But these songs were written by other writers because I am a Manufactured Pop Star

I just want my record label to know that I can write good music too

But when I want them to listen to my original material, they say we don't want this from you

There may be a chance that I put this material out there and it's not a success

The fans may think my writing is not deep and meaningful but just an incohrenet mess

But it's my record label that holds all of the power and all of the cards

They tell me my options are to perform their material or go out in the streets and starve

I still have a successful career,  I have had a few hit songs that hit the top of the charts

But that success is on someone else's terms and I am just a Manufactured Pop Star

I just want my label and the music buying public to give my original material a chance

But how in the world can that ever happen, when my music career is in someone else's hands?

I just wish the public would embrace my original material, like the legends of the past

But if they ever hear it, will they just have a good laugh?

I am a tormented soul and I am always filled with all of this self doubt

But that doesn't matter because my label will never put this original material out

I have had a few hit records that made it to the top of the charts

And my record label wants more of the same because I am just a Manufactured Pop Star

I just want the world to see me as the serious artist that I am

But how can that ever happen when my music career is in someone else's hands?
