Marked at Birth
Hiding behind clever words and false pretenses.
A sexuality isn’t meant to be a carousel-
But it feels like a circle for so many people.
If you come out, you end up in the spotlight.
Why does everyone care so much to talk about it?
Words about you, what you’ve done (or haven’t)-
All slip into the room, one after another.
No one wants to be Liberace. Not because-
There is a lack of desire. Bravery is different.
Are you brave enough to stand in front of them all?
I’m here, I’m queer, get used to it? But how...?
What about media? Those years of fear. Of AIDS.
Just an acronym. Just a few small letters and it
means the end. Why is it always about ‘the gays?’
No one wants to be remembered as ‘that faggot.’
Because we’ve been marked by our sexuality...
We fight to be more than we are--to be bigger.
Dreams are meant to be realized, right?
If we dream bigger, we can push away the pain.
Maybe one day, that homophobe will be-
Beneath me in society. Work for me, maybe.
But those are dreams. Meant to be of hope-
But never to truly see the light of day for us.
If you stay in the closet then you suffer, too.
Aren’t all of us born to be society’s laughing stock?
Maybe if we laugh too we can get by a day longer.
