Mascara

When I said Newtown,

He thought I said Utah.

He was taller than me.

He hunched over at times.

The music was lovely,

But at times, I could

Hardly notice it.

God stared back at me

As I closed my eyes.

I was an optical illusion;

Edie and Andy

Would have been proud.

He said I had nice eyes.

I thought his were nice, too.

My friends have disappeared

And are far away.

I picked up a dead rosary.

Two told us we were beautiful.

We danced and kissed

A lot.

Islands of friends approach,

They found me.

I felt very shy towards

My friends because I felt like a slut.

I thought it was 10 but it was already 12

Our parting was sudden,

The fleetingness of it becomes

More poignant than ever every minute.

I strive to remember everything

Blue eyes, Irish face.

And I accidentally left with him,

My cocaine mascara.
