Mask
You know that mask, the one you wear
You aren’t the only one, never was
We are in a masquerade ball
Where we all are masked, all fake
Hiding so much, hiding our real selves.
Some masks have been perfected, they never slip
The people are always in one piece
The ones succeeding, not letting the mask fall
The ones who are always smiling, happy
Those we envy and push to be
But those people have secrets
Just like you and me, they do
Their mask is slowly slipping
And it’s during those late hours
Of the night when it falls- when they break
You aren’t alone, you know
Everyone has a mask, everyone is faking
If we were to all take them off, things would be real
We would all be allowed to be who we really are
No more hiding, no more fear of judgement
But that’s not our world
That’s not how society is run
People are afraid, and so secrets remain
Secrets thought to be best kept to ourselves
The masks are the props
And our bodies our instruments.
Masks are used by all
Everyone does, some are just better actors
in this play we call life
