THE MASK I WEAR
"We all wear masks, metaphorically speaking".
But for some of us, it's a hard-core reality.
Day in and day out, it's a Ferris wheel of different masks we circle through.
No, it's not a personality disorder.
It's a viciously cruel game of 'Survival of Who Can Out-Mask Whom'
Where players are assigned lives to live
and a plethora of masks to wear in order to survive the cruelty of the world.
My Biology teacher once explained to me how the animal kingdom works;
"You either adapt, move, or die".
And that's how I play the game...minus the whole death thing for now.
I am the albino chameleon in life;
a blunt, colorless being that keeps her true rainbow buried beneath millions of dark clouds.
(You can't get hurt if they don't know your weaknesses, right?)
I'm an excellent shape shifter, and I know how to adapt quickly to my surroundings.
I have an infinite arsenal on masks to choose from, ranging from 'dead wallflower' to 'Jersey Shore Party Girl'...
whichever one helps me survive in any given situation.
If I have to play the girl who knows it all, I will.
If I have to fake friendship towards my enemies, I will.
If I have to bandwagon on the latest gossip of another individual, I will.
If I have to pretend that I'm 'hood' or 'ghetto' to blend in with my Black peers, I will.
If I have to pretend that I'm well put together even though I'm screaming my lungs out
as the pieces of my life burn against the floor, I will.
And again I repeat, I don't have a multiple personality disorder;
I just play the game better than others.
