To the Masks We Hide Behind
I am the girl who walks beside you to class
Seemingly no different than any other in the mass
Afraid to sleep at night
For fear of another breaking loss that could steal the light
I am the girl
I am the boy who laughs in all the right places
Just another in a sea of faces
Afraid of the future that might swallow me whole
And the drugs I take that kill my soul
I am the boy
I am the woman who does everything she’s told
Wouldn’t utter a single word even if she could
Becuase every time I tried to fight back
Down, I just got smacked
I am the woman
I am the man beside you on the train
Always searching for a roof to keep me out of the rain
Barely able to afford anything I see
And shamed by anything that comes free
I am the man
We are the people who fight back our ears
Hold in our tears
Our public facade confident, proud, formal
The private what no one should call normal
We are the people you don’t see
