Matriarch

Once upon a time, there was a beast and a dime.

For months, she ran through his mind.

Until one day he asked, with a smile,

“I’ve been noticing you here for a while,

Are you up to go to dinner?”

She said, pleasantly surprised,

“Why yes, you can pick me up, half past five.”

Then he pulled up, in his modern carriage,

And she thought, “Will I get a Mercedes, if this makes it to marriage?”

They sat and exchanged pleasantries as he drove to the bar.

She sat in the passenger seat, feeling like a star.

She opened the menu hearing, “Get whatever you’d like.”

Thinking maybe he might,

Prefer to order for her for she was not used to this kind of night.

He said, “Filet mignon and your best crab legs. We’ll start with the finest merlot.”

And she sat on the edge.

Confused and excited, she felt as though life wasn’t real.

As he talked about how he would help her through school, her debt, how he would pay every bill.

She focused in on a bottle of Tabasco that sat straight up.

She’ll never forget that moment or that hot sauce that sat next to her clutch.

Weeks went by and he made a commitment to her, saying,

“You’ve got my love for the rest of my life.”

She fell head over heels.

Until one evening she realized, “Now something just isn’t right.”

She asked to see his phone and this started quite the fight.

Finding women, he had said were gone, basically dead.

She found herself crying, alone in her bed.

He had promised many things.

Love, honesty.

But what left the dime, most hopeless, was his commitment to her time.

Her time in school as she finished her degree,

Becoming an attorney,

Making changes, she only saw in her dreams.

Days went by and she decided to read,

Anything that would make her feel free.

The dime, then, reached out to her parents that loved her so.

With their support, and her hard work,

She was, then, able to achieve her dreams which truly made her glow.

Leaving the beast in the past, who truly finished last.

She became a Queen, a matriarchy she would see.

Letting all the young women know the key,

“Keep your head up and never rely on a beast, for you never know who you could be.”
