May I Go Gentle

May I Go Gentle, after Mr D Thomas

May I go gentle into that good night

To melt rootless as mist

Into the vast and groundless void

Almost invisible

Like the whisper of a new moon

Pale blade in the evening sky

And may I go soft into that good night

Surrendering all my treasures

My lovely babes in their kingdoms of love

The brave dances and the dancing shoes

The feet that danced, the hands that held

The bones all wrapped in flesh and sinewed round

With layers of living light

The heart and her thousand dreams of love

The mind in its labyrinth

Layer upon layer

All undone

May I go open into that clear light

No ground beneath, nowhere to fall

No one to be, no thing to hold

Dissolving like sea foam

Like mist in the meadow

Into mystery

Into infinite beauty

Oh may I go gentle into that good night
