Mayella's poem from To Kill a Mockingbird
I am Mayella
And these are my motives
I'm lonely
Broken
Created by my father
Who kept me hidden
I’m alone
I yearned for somebody
To love
To feel loved
Then he comes
Why did it have to be him
He helped me
But did not ask for anything back
He respected me
Even though I treated him
Like trash
We were alone
And I couldn't help myself
This black hole
In my soul
Eating me up
Cause I'm lonely
He was the only one
Who made me feel wanted
So I did the unspeakable
The unbearable
And I kissed a man
Who was black
I got beaten
I didn't know who to hate more
The man who keeps me here
Stuck and alone
Or the man who made me think
I loved him
I lied
My tongues all twisted
By lies
So I killed him
By testifying
against him
My mouth filled with the tales
That I created
To save my life
From my father
Who would have beaten me anyways
I'm so lost
And afraid
I'm the monster
That my father made
When he died
I didn't cry
I smiled
Filled with content
Cause
My sanity's just all twisted and bent
All created by my father
Who only came
And went
I'm so tired of being afraid and alone
But now that he's gone
Maybe now I can finally call my home
A home.
