Medusa Goes to Prom

Mount Olympus Senior Prom was just a month away

The school was abuzz with cute promposals every single day

And though happy for the askees, Medusa was still upset

Because as just lowley sophomore, she couldn’t go to prom yet

Medusa knew she was gorgeous, and she said it every day

To herself in the mirror, and anyone who came her way

She boasted about her luscious locks and her skin more precious than snow

She praised herself on social media so everyone would know

Her hair came down in stunning waves and ended above her hips

Her high and rosy cheekbones accentuated her perfectly pink lips

Her skin was as smooth and delicate as the petals on a rose

She was practically perfect, from her head down to her toes

There is nothing wrong with being beautiful or having self love

It is what most people on this earth are trying to get a hold of

But there comes a point when your self love turns into conceitedness

And all you will receive from others is hatred, disgust, and bitterness

But alas, this is something Medusa didn’t understand

She wanted to go to prom to prove she was the most beautiful girl in all the land

“But how will I get it?” she asked herself in pity

“Aha!” she told herself, “I’ll join the Prom Committee!”

You see, the Prom Committee was open to every age

Because they needed help with all the planning that happened backstage

As a little “thank-you” for helping to kick the event into high gear

Every volunteer got a free ticket to the senior prom that year

Medusa was the first one to sign up on the list

This was an opportunity she sure as heck wasn’t going to miss

She showed up early and attending every meeting, wanting to give it her all

Even though she spent most of them looking at her reflection in the disco ball

The day before prom, the planning phase was finally done

She ran to the coordinators office to receive the ticket she had won

While waiting in the office she saw something that made her start reeling

Posters of a beautiful prom queen candidate decorated the walls from floor to ceiling

Even Medusa had to admit, Aphrodite was more than stunning

And was no doubt more beautiful than all the other girls running

The sight of such a marvel should have made her feel insecure

She knew Aphrodite was beautiful, but compared to Medusa, she wasn’t so sure

Prom night rolled around and Medusa was more than excited

With the thought of getting all dressed up, a fire inside her had been ignited

She donned a satin white a-line dress to compliment her youthful glow

With matching white diamond earrings and a crystal clutch against her torso

She walked into the ballroom ready to stun everyone with her beauty

Not expecting the coordinators to give her crowning duty

She took the job reluctantly for fear of her ticket getting revoked

She was to hand the winners their crowns and wait on stage as they spoke

When the time came to announce the winners, she realized she wasn’t alone

A guy her age stood right beside her holding a microphone

They called the gorgeous girl from the posters up to receive her crown

She gracefully walked up the stage in the most beautiful chiffon red gown

They placed the crown on her head and the crowd began to clap

Annoyed she wasn’t the one receiving affection, Medusa took a step back

Not realizing that the mic was on, she leaned over to the guy and said

“Why waste such a gorgeous crown, I would have made a far prettier prom queen instead.”

Every head in the room turned to Medusa, and even the music paused

So consumed with her own beauty and unaware of the trouble she caused

Aphrodite looked Medusa in the eye and spoke as loud as a thunder rumble

“There’s so much more to life than your looks and it’s time that you were humbled.”

Aphrodite, still holding onto her crown, pushed Medusa off the stage

Right into a bowl of bright green punch and made her blind with rage

Medusa charged head first at Aphrodite, attempting to hit her with a blow

But Aphrodite side stepped, and Medusa went flying into a bowl of green jello

When she took her head out, her hair was sticking out in all different angles

Attempting to preserve her beauty, she tried to flatten her hair, but created more tangles

Medusa’s dress was now clinging to her body and stained bright green

What once beheld a beauty, now beheld something not meant to be seen

Everyone that looked at her became sick with laughter

She ran out the doors of the ballroom and no one chased after

Medusa’s story of her obsession with herself was not a tale to be taken lightly

It doesn’t matter what you look like on the outside, because what is inside is key
