Melancholy Meanderer
There once was a dark and a small, dreary road;
It had overgrown hedges, but upon which I strode
All too often, for I'd nothing better to do;
It was here that I thought most of you.
Did I have a decision, or maybe intention
To walk the walk I meant with you?...
It had trees of all sizes, each leaf a new shape.
Each I knew held demise, so I wore a small cape.
But I soon found out more and began to explore
Many roads I knew not which to take...
I roamed and I rambled thru bushes and brambles,
Then I fell down into a ravine;
It was then I rolled into a spring.
You'd have loved how its clearness
Could make one feel fearless;
So, alone I decided to sing...
Whether North, West or South
I kept open my mouth.
Whether East, up or down
Never once did I frown;
I could tell that you thought of me too,
But I hadn't the proof or a clue.
I stumbled and fell and the birds all could tell
I was stricken with what they knew not.
Here I slept without bed or a cot...
I awoke to the sound of the wolves all around,
And I wondered just what I should do;
I'd have known had I been there with you.
But I was not afraid; as I spoke, they obeyed,
And I knew I'd a gift of some kind;
Though I'd probably just lost my mind...
So I then bathed myself in the spring;
Still my mind had not known but one thing;
It was thinking of you as I'd sing,
And the tears flowed as fast as the spring...
All I know was I wandered and doing so pondered
what was it I did that was wrong?
Never once did I claim to be strong;
Just maybe I didn't belong?
Could it be she'd no love for my song?...
…At the last I just stared at the moon;
It was full, but with hunger I'd soon
Be a memory of her in the past.
Should've known what is good never lasts...
