A Memory Unshared

Did choose that dreadful day,

To swim far away from the sand?

Did I choose to go far from everyone

Or was it part of someone’s plan?

Fate or destiny seemed so distant and far

From my sandy white shore

Surrounded by those who’d chart their own course

Could it have been something more?

I remember my anguish and effort

To refrain from drowning therein

I remember times I was dragged under,

Praying to God for strength to swim.

What made me win?

It’s so hard to say that, I was a victor that day,

But as the shark prowled down beneath me

Someone came, and pulled me away.

Am I unscathed? Mostly,

I lost nothing I needed to keep,

But still when I’m in some dark moments,

From old wounds some malignity seeps.

I fight and I fight against foes of the mind,

Trying so hard not to weep;

And then . . . then I can sleep.
