Menagerie

My ribs are a menagerie

a delicate cage with tiny birds and large paws

they peck and claw, chirp and roar

with every breath my lungs heave

I feel the creatures inside me

And then the main exhibit

my heart, the width of my bony fist

a deep red butterfly

it’s velvety wings fluttering against the cage

a fragile captive,

in need of release
