Mental Illness

A hurricane of doubt swirling through my mind

at my weakest moment there’s no love at all that I can find.

She’s sick in the head

I totally agree.

They laugh and joke about my mental illness

and I smile and play along

while deep down I just want to be free.

What’s your name?

Lejourney I say.

Do they really think I’m dumb?

They ask 100 questions while inside I’m still feeling numb

You get 1 call a day

as if this is prison

why does it take a person to be institutionalized

 for someone to finally listen.

People continue going on with their lives

even after the hurtful things they s-a-y say

while all the mean words are s-t-i-g-m-a-s

circulating in my b-r-a-i-n brain

Get well soon they tell me

as if my mind is a broken arm

 that can me nicely bandaged

and quickly healed.

Broken glass is a better metaphor for being mentally ill.

Because like broken glass

once you drop it

it shatters and can’t easily

or fully be put back together again.
