A Message To My Past Self

Bubbling, rippling, boiling fears

Red hot steaming ears.

Anger from the little voice

The one you have no choice

To ignore.

He can shake you to your core.

Soon you fear he is right

You stop putting up a fight.

Dark clouds loom.

Violent tides bring gloom.

“Showing the outside,”

He will chide,

“Is the worst you could do.

They will laugh at you.

They will tease and taunt.

Rip it to shreds, stomp,

Squash, and maul it.

Throw your work in a pit.”

You almost listen and give

Up. But, you want to live.

You are tired of fear.

Tired of living year

After year with this voice.

You make a choice.

You show the outside

And hang on tight for the ride.

Some people don’t

Like it. Some won’t.

Others are amazed

With glasses raised

To you. You go to kill

The voice. You think you will.

He’s done so much

You know he is such

A bully. Anger explodes.

Barriers erode.

The earthquakes

Make the ground rumble and shake.

He caused such hate.

Self destruction at a terrible rate.

You go to kill

The voice. You say you will.

But, you don’t.

You won’t.

You lower the knife.

You spare his life.

You still live with him

But it isn’t so grim.

You no longer let

Him get

To you.

You think about what

He says. But,

You run the show.

And you let him know.

Bubbling, rippling, boiling fears

Red hot steaming ears.

Cool air in cool air out.

Steam rising all about.

Out comes a braver side

And a smile that just won’t hide.
