Mi Realidad

ENGLISH TRANSLATION BELLOW

ENGLISH VERSION

When I was little I dreamed of living in the United States.

I dreamed of a life similar to the movies: large kitchens, a garden full of different flowers, a two-floor house and my room painted in colors.

I dreamed of Speaking English, dining at fancy restaurants, follow a fashion trend, and buy one of those cars, those that are really expensive.

However, once I migrated here, my reality took a 360 degree turn and I realized that my reality was nothing but stolen dreams. My parents got divorced, after that, my hopes to live a “normal” life were forgotten.

It was a really tough moments and I did not know what else to do but to hang around the block, with a lot of problems, doubts and I was drowned with confusion.

My mom would work day and night to buy me everything I needed, and I was ignorant that my mom would scarify herself just to see me happy. And my dad, the man I thank so much for having introduced me to the fucked up social reality that we live in, he must be addicted to drugs, but what else do I expect if this country pushes us to misery? It pushes us to believe that we are less human than rich whites.  It pushed us to believe that they deserve a good life, and we are not living. But rather surviving.

Surviving in a racist country where they make anti-immigrant laws and deport our families without notice. A country where a construction worker is stolen off his wage, and he rather not protest in fear of being deported.  A country where a farm worker is rapped by her boss, and she cries at night but choses to not speak, and little by little we learn the meaning of “authority.”

I am just a sista who was stolen off her dreams. I am not cynical about the government’s hypocrisy in this society. These are the people that we trust, and yet they intelligently distort reality and always end up winning.

The poor works too much, because that is the way we have been trained; while rich does not work for shit, and still expects a lot from us. Society seems to be the man and the people his woman submissively accepting his machismo.

But the struggle does not end here, the struggle is barely starting. I might be a young woman who realized the rich white life was not meant for me. Nevertheless, because I have struggled I have grown and learned my purpose:  speak up for what I believe is right and do not let anybody silence me. I was born screaming, so why will they try to silence me?

Let’s collectively story-tell, let’s unite our stories so that one day we can live in a society where the silent is heard and the homeless is given a home to live in.
