Mind is Racing

Mind is racing Lips are tight and twisted Not sure if I should speak If I can speak If I will speak - Because I don't want to look like an idiot And suffer that awkward moment when No one laughs and I wanted them to Someone laughs and I didn't want them to Or...the horror...I insult someone by accident - Mind is racing Trying to figure out what to say Can't look antisocial now Not when I want to stand out When I want to be noticed When I want to be heard When I want some sense of your approval; I think and nothing is coming Nothing to say out loud, but plenty to ponder saying If I wait to long, the moment where I can say something Will be lost And I will descend into silence for the rest of the free period Mind is racing Because I'm thinking about what you might say Wondering why I'm so concerned with what you Might say I'm losing my nerve - Heck, what nerve? I don't even have a nerve: I'm still sitting awkwardly, quietly, Struggling to smile or speak - I can't tell now; Just being near you drives me crazy But not crazy enough to talk yet... Mind is racing And the finish line comes sooner than I thought Because just when I'm ready to lose my almost-nerve for good You speak to me And I can relax and utter the most glorious syllable ever uttered: "Hi."
