In the mirror
In the mirror I see two brown eyes
or are they black like the night that hides all the lies
or are they a mixture of purple and blue
from the constant beating I take from you
I see a nose kissed by the sun
to ease the pain i'd run and run
I see bright lips, round and plump
a little too red, that's quite a big bump
keep looking down I see two arms
a line here a scar there but I swear I meant no harm
attached are two strong rough hands
calloused over from the things I can't understand
but beyond the surface if you could look underneath
there's the voice of a girl that lies just beneath
a voice that inside is screaming in rage
but forced down deeper each time in her cage
she's fighting fight she knows she can't win
but to fight for what's right, is that such a sin?
choked down each time she tries to make herself heard
locked up again, sucks to be the caged bird
how long can the bird sing before it runs out of breath?
can it sing when all is wrong and all it can think are thoughts about death?
this voice inside me prays to break out
it's getting too tired to sing, too tired to shout
but in the mirror I still see it, into the heart if you stare
it's beaten and bruised but at least it's still there
get up little voice it's your turn to fight
and fight it does, with all of its might
odds are it'll lose and get beat to the ground
but that doesn't mean it won't still make a sound
maybe one day it'll be heard loud and clear
and not just be seen by me in the mirror.
