A mirror: a reflective surface
The white wall behind me mocks me, the lights shine
above me, two different sized light bulbs. The
faucet sprays water all over me. Are we
that unlucky? But the mirror, the mirror
is why I always stand here, in the bathroom
The mirror has seen through me, caused me to see
through myself, my own reflection a mere blur
But the mirror, the mirror has seen so much.
Brown eyes like a jar of honey, the windows
to my soul, it's seen them full of life, hope, anger,
happiness and tears. It's seen them dilated,
even irritated from the cheap makeup
remover. It's seen my cheeks flushed a crimson
red, my nose sprinkled with freckles, my eyebrows
unplucked, my raven black hair fading from the
sun. Every single open pore reflected,
every single imperfection highlighted
But the mirror, the mirror has seen me in
my purest forms: dancing, singing, laying in
the tub, sitting on the toilet, and brushing
my teeth: up, down, right, left, spit, rinse, and repeat
It's seen all my features. My arms, my hands and
how I tend to wash them repeatedly, my
strong shoulders standing, my chewed up nails, my
chapped lips, my scars, my bruises, my rushed mornings
to go to school and my rushed nights to go to
sleep. It's seen my exhaustion, my carelessness,
my confidence, and my insecurities
But the mirror, the mirror has even heard
me. Heard me speak, heard me cry, heard me laugh, heard
my heart beat to my favorite songs, it's heard
me drop the showerhead, the shampoo bottles,
and the razors too many times to keep count
But the mirror, the mirror knows me. It knows
how I am way to attached to my earphones
It knows how my eyes light up when I listen
to my favorite bands, it knows the way
I run my hands through my hair, it knows that I
spend too much time just starring at the mirror
It knows how I'd rather shower in the night
It knows how I have to be rushed out of the
bathroom or else I'll stay in there forever
It reflects everything it knows, all I know
But the mirror, the mirror sees, hears, and knows
it all. My best, my worst, and my purest form
of myself. I feel so utterly exposed.
