Mirrors

“Take a look in the mirror,

What do you see?”

I look and my mind whispers,

‘Athlete?”

But I’m just a bit too soft,

And my stomach shakes just a little too much,

For that.

Next, my brain suggests,

“Happy?”

But my eyes are a bit too tired,

The circles beneath them a bit too dark,

For that.

Finally, my heart steps forward.

“Human,” it says gently.

And I look at my arms that have held shaking shoulders,

And my legs, that have carried me up mountains,

At my hands that splatter pages with ink to create magic,

And my mouth forms the words,

“Yes, dear,

And that’s all you have to be.”
