Miscellaneous

Miscellaneous

Is there an existing material item that I should not be able to live without? I sort through the miscellaneous files in my brain, sifting through all of the "things" that are siginificantly...handy. But the only thing they all have in common is that I don't have a dire need for any of them. And, no, I do not leave the house without my iPhone, and, yes, I experience a very intense anxiety when it isn't exactly whereileftitfivesecondsago...! But I think...just maybe...constant access to instagram might be something I can live without. Every day is so centered around things-- from the strings that wrap our skin to the newest palm sized device. The human race is less about living and more about who can make it to the top first. Not the top of the food chain. No longer is it the survival of the fittest, but the survival of the finest, newest, fanciest. Success is the view from the top of a pile of useless stuff that has replaced secret handshakes and hide-and-go-seek. Don't get me wrong, I have friends, and I definitely know how to communicate through 140 characters (or less!). Of course, eye contact is still very valuable, especially when you are texting out the new Snapchat filter. While encounters with strangers make me want to crawl out of my skin, the exhilarating experience of stepping out of my confinement is intoxicating. Human connection fills me with billions of butterflies and turns my cheeks to roses-- I wish I could hit the like button for these moments, but there is nothing to describe the fulfillment I experience after a real live conversation. my human glass is overflowing, and not even the most squinty-eyed skeptic could argue the half empty theory. THis world is filled with so many amazing things, but not the ones found on the other side of a locked glass case. Go outside and have a conversation, lay down in a bed of grass and let the sky sing your eyes a melody that you don't have to subscribe to monthly. Thinking of a world wihtout these simple wonders makes me want to toss my iPhone and never look back... the one thing I can truly live without.
