The Modern Boogeyman: Anxiety
For some, the boogeyman is a tool used to keep kids in line.
I think it's just the opposite in today's world:
It's the sense of anguish at an upcoming task
It's the fear of being forgotten by those you value
It isn't something you run from; it's a different kind of fear.
The boogeyman is a paralyzing indecision that leave its victims exactly where it found them
Though they may be in the same place, physically, they're worse off after their run-in
You see, the boogeyman operates with the power of self-doubt and second guessing
Indecision is its playground and choice paralysis its sustenance.
The boogeyman banks on the fear of taking the wrong step is greater than that of taking any step
This invisible foe can ruin lives without ever lifting a finger
Turn souls once beaming with potential into what could've been
The scariest part is that it can claim a victim through sheer word of mouth
Being constantly shown extravagant lives from early ages sows seeds of inferiority
Given enough time, the boogeyman will come to reap a harvest;
A harvest that has been nurtured and tended to by every negative thought and tinge of inadequacy
By now, the Boogeyman has grown comfortable as its food source is now self-cultivating
Its assumption in humans to doubt their own abilities has kept it alive this long, after all
