The Modern Narcissus

He spends all day

In that golden mirror;

That’s how he loves to stay

Consequences are minor

A small and buzzing gnat

Though they grow ever nearer

He can’t see his fat

Nor any flaws

As he struts with his bat

Though the truth naws

Though investigators find

Diggin with their sharp claws

They say his face is lined

They say his past is checkered

They say on other’s backs he climbed

But he himself inspected

Through the mirror of no mistakes

They believe him; he is respected

They don’t see all he takes

They can’t smell his rot

They don’t care he fakes

But here’s this for thought:

The Narcissist falls

His own end is wrought

His gilded walls

Will soon crash down

To thunderous applause

His gaudy crown

Trampled beneath Equality’s feet

No one will care when he frowns

His vanity will retreat

As he destroys himself

As history does once, it will repeat
