The Mold

from birth,
media has taught us,
pink is a "girl" color
and blue is for boys,
you are either
sporty or girly,
and nothing is in between

from there, we are taught
that our only use is to be
pretty, beautiful, lovely
we can't get dirty
or opinionated,
and boys?
well, "boys will be boys"

we are fed
a prepackaged girl culture,
in the form of
weight loss, makeup,
hair products because there is
nothing more than being sexy

why should 78% of teens
be upset with their bodies?
and girls of 10 years old
trying to lose weight?
and don't more than 4% of women
deserve to love their bodies

we are bombarded
with the ideal image
of a woman,
but how can that be ideal
if only 5% of women
can achieve that body

we risk our health
we risk our lives
we starve and weight
and measure for
this unrealistic expectation
of our bodies

we should not see models
who weigh 25% less
than we do
and whose faces and bodies
have been photoshopped
until they aren't even real

"look sexy in those new jeans"
"find your inner super-model"
but why is it never
"love yourself, for who you are"
we are taught to love each other
but not ourselves

from birth,
media has taught us,
what we should look like,
act like, and how we should feel
me? i think
we should Break Their Mold
