Moments
“Moments”
Life happens in seconds
Not hours, days, or weeks
It is in that one small moment
Everything Changes
The pause between breathes
When something is
Not quite right
As though the breath,
You just took
And the next one
Somehow happened
Years apart
When you wake up
In the night
Your heart racing
Knowing it all fell apart
The let’s sit down
And talk statement
Sends chills
Down your spine
And the space between
The look and the first word
Have already spoke volumes
No other moment can
When the words spoken
Can’t find your heart
In that moment
You go numb
The moments that follow
Are made up of cascading
seconds over days and weeks
Eventually turning into years
You do not know how
You got here
It is as though your nightmares
Have met your real life
In one horrific replay that
Won’t end
The phone call,
To tell you your test results
Are all clear
The day you open the letter
To get into the Grad School
Of your dreams
The reconnection
With a long-time friend
Who seems to slide back in
As though they never left
In one moment
A smile warms you
The next a memory
Rips you wide open
All over again
The pendulum swings
To and fro’
Counting each second
In its own unique space
It does not have
Attachment to one or the other
It just tics them off one by one
If you have ever watched
The second hand of a clock
You realize there are really seconds
And those seconds
Are more distinct than we admit
We all wake up one day
And say, “How did this happen?”
Yet, each second denoted the change
It was happening moment by moment
The moment in which honesty
Could have been the entrée of choice
Yet lies seemed better suited
The moment in which one’s needs
Could have been uttered
Instead another concession was made
The moment when a simple “no”
Could have changed it all
Yet, a hesitant “yes” was mumbled
Our lives don’t happen
in weeks, months, and years
They happen in moments
Each moment
We get a choice
A choice to be present
To lean in
To feel it ALL
Every second of every day
We get to decide
To choose our story
Or to let fate keep
Holding the pen
Until one day
Fate crushes the pen
And the ink goes flying
Across the pages
And rain starts to blur
The words of this story
In that moment
What do we do?
Do we rip the pages to shreds?
Or sit down a cry?
Do we yell at the injustice of it all?
How could this life
I so carefully crafted
Disintegrate before my eyes
The bigger question is
In what moment
Did you decide fate
Had a better plan for your life
Than you did?
Your really angry about that
Angry you gave up
Thousands of moments
To someone else’s plan
To your fears
To your boogey man
To your internal hell
As you sit on the ground
Surrounded by tiny pieces
Of your carefully planned life
You have one moment
That space between breathes
To decide:
In this moment,
Will I choose me
My dreams
My vision
My needs
My goals
My fantasies
My life still untold
See the story has not even started
Your clock has been frozen
Fate has been ticking away
Moment by moment of your life
Until now
Now, in this chasm
Between fate and destiny
This moment hangs in suspense
What will you choose?
You can continue on
As though nothing has changed
You can keep getting up
Rinse, wash, repeat
Or, you can wake the fuck up
Rip off the covers
Throw open the window
And own your dream
A dream is just a snapshot in your mind
Comprised of all your deepest wants and desires
Held hostage in your soul
Because deep down
You do not believe your capable of creating them
Today, in this moment,
You can choose
You can let fate stand at your grave
And read its’ rendition of your life
Or you can claim your destiny
And leave a legacy
The world will never let go untold
