The Monster

Racism is slowly breathing, It is hiding, It is waiting. No longer does racism reign. It cannot exist in the public again. It cannot change our laws, our fathers’ vocation, It cannot help but elicit outrage from every location. Yet racism is slowly breathing, It is hiding, It is waiting. We cannot hold each other’s hands Our present is not in our command. We cannot sing, “we are free at last!” For It is embedded not only in our past, Today, racism is slowly breathing, It is hiding, It is waiting. When our past mistakes lurk in our minds, We cannot help but find That we are subject to our views We are slaves to bias that skews Our understanding. Once we misunderstand Racism will then take command. How do we get rid of It? the monster that can fit Into all of the corners of our eyes that make us distinguish black and white, but make us blind in all that matters. So we must trudge through the waters Of time. Time makes change. It does already. We see that throughout our history. With time, understanding grows While It withers. So we know We must wait because As racism is slowly breathing, hiding, waiting, It is slowly dying.
