The monster on my back

There is this horrible monster
that climbs up on my back
it whispers profanities
it reminds me its back

There is a monster on my back
it controls my to-and-fro
it whispers oh such painful things
again and again

This monster likes reminding me
of years gone by
of dust covered stories
and memories I’d like to deny

There is a monster on my back
It’s consuming me bit by bit
I wish this monster would give up
leaving me to live at peace

This monster though is the thorn
the thorn within my flesh
it reminds me daily
without God, I would not exist
