Moonlight Escape

The moonlight shines a path for me,

But the breeze picks up so suddenly.

I follow its lead to get away,

Yet here in the dirt I do lay.

My head is hard and my body is strong,

But my eyes are void to all that is wrong.

I turn off my brain to block out the pain,

The happiness I felt was all in vain.

Moonlight escape, I'd get away,

I'd run and look for the brighter day

I look ahead and don't look back,

But the scars are all over, they do not lack.

Nowhere to go, nowhere to hide,

What choice do I have?  I've already lied.

One friend I have, the moon is he,

His light shines as a smooth remedy.

My feet are worn, by back is torn,

Forgotten the girl from when I was born.

Moonlight escape, frightened am I,

I wish how I wish that I could fly.

I'd fly so far from this run-down place,

Where they open and close this broken case.

On the ground I am forced to reside,

With his eyes and hands not leaving my side.

His touch makes me tremble, his eyes make me shake,

But my will to keep running he cannot take.

Moonlight escape, it shines its light,

To wherever I run all through the night.

Yet the moon is fading and I am afraid,

The debt I owe him has not been paid.

I cannot leave, I must go back,

My strength, my courage, I'll surely pack.

The moonlight fades,

The daylight raids.

I am left alone and cannot moan.

Stand up to him?  I dare not,

My heart, my body, slowly wrought.

I see my bed where I hate to sleep,

So I lay in the closet barried deep.

A pallot I made in this safe, tight shade,

Where I close my eyes, hiding from raid.

The earth or the heavens?  I cannot decide,

Of where I will soon choose to reside.

Peace in the heavens, pain on earth,

My value I've been shown - No true worth

Hidden from the world - long sleeves and hats,

Inside my soul, filled with rats.

The night comes again, moonlight escape,

No rats, no bruises, no yelling, no rape.

I run and I run with my head held high,

Emotions are choices, nothing I buy.

Happy and free in the moonlight I run,

I say goodbye to the moonlight, my life is done.
