More Than Just...

You cradled the same head that I now carry high,

You held the hands that now carry my promises and aspirations,

You fed the mouth that now feeds my friends in dark times,

You gave me more than just my curls.

You gave me the courage to fight for others,

You gave me the strength to face the unfaceable,

You gave me the compassion to love the unknown and undeserving,

You gave me the more than just my eyes.

You showed me how to be brave in when it is easier to be doubtful,

You stayed strong during times of great mourning,

You taught us kindness and represent it through everything you do,

You gave me more than just my nose.

Because of you, I am fearless in times of immense fear,

Because of you, I am unyielding when those around me yield,

Because of you, I am loving and gentle to all that need love and gentleness,

You gave me more than just looks.

You don’t give yourself enough credit,

You don’t always see how impactful you are,

You don’t know how special you are to me,

Mother of mine, you gave me everything I hold dear.
