More than just a Poem about Me
I dislike talking about myself, it’s something I hate.
But, there’s no avoiding this cause it’s for a grade.
I come from Garysburg, the other side of the state.
I grew up in a trailer park, only a few can relate.
We couldn’t afford anywhere else, always short on cash.
Hoping a man could step in, but they were always on the dash.
My momma was raisin’ us kids all by herself all on her own,
And the neighborhood was rough but I still call it home.
Seein’ grown men outside, smokin’ a joint on the porch.
Seein’ thugs with guns and my momma done got a divorce.
With my brother’s father, his dad won’t mine.
I already lost my father cause of a man with a knife.
Sent it through my daddy’s back, and my brother’s got a father that’s going to jail;
Already two boys without a daddy, and we livin’ in hell.
People trying to fight my mom and break our bonds,
While I’m gettin’ beat on a playground by kids with no heart at all.
Then my momma had my sister, and her dad just dipped;
He left us for his “real family” and a much nicer crib.
This man makes major paper, but never pays Child Support,
And I’m doing things to get myself done for.
I was just an angry kid always getting in a fight.
Every single day I was giving my momma a new fright.
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared,
So she beat me with a belt, and I saw her tears in the mirror.
Call me Robert Frost cause I had to choose a path.
Would I do what’s hard, or take the path of my dad?
My mom wanted her kids to have more than she had.
I ain’t fit to sacrifice that for any of my selfish hate or pride.
And you would have done the same if you saw them eyes.
I embrace the past cause that gave me power.
I’m stepping into work right after hoppin’ out the shower.
I had to wash off all this crap I been through.
I’m trying to make this world better for my children to get to.
Forget those other guys, I’mma be a father.
I see no reason to make this hell any hotter.
Life thought it had me, thought it had my fate spurned.
Had me trapped in a corner, but now the table is turned.
After turning the table, I flipped it in the air!
Then I threw life to the ground and beat it with the chair.
Won’t nothing keep me down. Won’t nothin’ scare me.
I’ve risen above that to become legendary.
Parents are scared of their kids seein’ stuff on tv,
But what they’re scared to see I’ve seen in 3D.
(If you know what I mean.)
Now I wanna help save people like my God saved me
Because though I was once blind, I can now clearly see.
I’m using this sight to look for a brighter day.
Actions speak louder than words; now listen to what I say.
Some people in this world just don’t know a heart when they see it,
So when they look in my direction they call me heartless.
I try to spread the word of God when nobody heeds it.
I always get the same reaction regardless.
For the sake of decency I haven’t even mentioned the worst of my stuff.
The only hope I have is Christ and unconditional love.
Get laughed at for Christ, fussed out for Christ,
Get beat down for Christ, cussed at for Christ,
Isolated for Christ, and despised for Christ.
Maybe not for you, but I would change a glimmer in this light.
Cause there’s no other life but Christ.
At the table with my father, I’m always sitting.
Drinking from the fount’ of blessing, I’m always sipping.
Seeing people chill at the pool of sin, they always dipping.
And the same people ask the question “why this world always tripping?”
If you don’t wanna hear this stuff whatever, I shake that dust off my feet.
But, it’s others running from the word, you never see me on the retreat.
What makes what I spit so sick? It comes from the heart through the brain.
I’m trynna get these folks to remember my name.
“A” is for the amazement in their eyes,
From the hurdles in my life and my life’s close demise.
Now I run through the hurdles, splitting some in half.
Some of them get shattered completely, and there’s no rewinding me back.
“L” is for this little light of mine.
You best believe I’mma let it shine.
Don’t belong in no bush I throw it in the shrine;
I’m fit to cross the line with something so fine.
The second “A” is for the action that’s trying to take place.
Not just the stuff I do, there’s more than that.
It starts with a thought in my heart if I wanna get rid of this hate.
But, this stuff’s hard to do while under attack,
Especially when they got a knife, and they comin’ for your back.
But, if you know me I got homies who got that back in any sort of trap.
It’s nice to have people who’ll do anything for you.
But, you gotta be strong yosef when you the oldest of 5 and they adore you.
“N” for never mind them other men.
I’m doin’ me, and I ain’t concerned about them.
Prometheus brought us fire; well I’m bringing these rhymes.
If we forever together, we can save our own lives.
There’s no “I” in team, but there’s an “I” in tried
To flap my wings, then I took off and flied.
And I sure enough will, and I sure enough did;
Cause there’s also an “I” in the word win!
Epic, yeah, take that to the blog.
I can’t wait to see what happens in my epilogue.
I sell arms to Tony Stark, gave Link a new heart.
Confident in my abilities, but always on my guard.
My family broker than a window, sometimes it makes me wanna holla,
But now I got opportunity, and I’m fit to point guard on every dollar.
I’m in free fall right now, picking up speed;
Getting ready for my impact while picking fruit off the trees.
Today my mom has a new man, and they still going strong.
He took her with 3 kids; God must have sent him along.
Now I have two more baby sisters making me the oldest of 5.
Been through some stuff, but I’m the luckiest alive.
Now when I got troubles I look up to the sky.
Family lives in the same place, but upgraded to a double-wide!
At school, at church, at home, and in life;
People look at me like a hero, and I ain’t used to that sight!
Met people who love me and care, I’m seein it in the nation.
On top of that I’m getting a higher education.
I got some real friends in my life. I’d take a bullet for ya’ll.
I’d rather it be made of rubber, either way I’d take it raw.
Blood is thicker than water, but you all blood to me.
Ya’ll is all brothers and sisters, and that’s plain enough to see.
My momma tells me about some problems in the fam;
I always got this to say:
“Through God all things are possible in any jam.
Plus we made it through the night, so I know we can make it through the day.”
