Morning

If my days were to start

In the cold and in the dark,

I could not thaw my frozen heart

For morning gives my life its spark.

If my eyes could never see

The dawn light break through barren trees,

I could not find the will to be

For morning is my tranquility.

If the birds did not rejoice

The rising sun with gleeful noise,

My sense of self would be destroyed

For morning gives my soul its poise.

If my coffee where to brew

When the noonday skies were blue,

My ravished mind would be confused

For morning makes my tongue taste true.

If the night dragged on forever

Through the storms and cloudless weather,

Dispair would pervade every last endeavor

For morning is my greatest pleasure.

What I enjoyed the most about this piece was writing from the perspective of an early bird, whereas I actually prefer nighttime. It would've been too simple to write about something I personally understand - it's important to learn how to crawl around in someone else's skin and appreciate their take on the world.
