Morning Light

The day was long

Too long to be excited

For a date with him along

I know he cares for me

Like I am happy to be with him

But happy wasn’t what I wanted to be

We ate dinner at eight

I barely touched my food

He thought his was great

The night dragged on

He talked and held me close

His love was not a con

He dropped me off

And he said goodnight

Without a single scoff

Before I fell asleep that night

He texted to see if I was okay

I turned off my light

Yes, I said that night

Good night, he said

I’ll see in the morning light
