Most Grown Up of All
Growing up is hard, but we often don’t have a choice
Some people try to fight it while others rejoice
I knew I was growing up. I started college in the fall
But on one faithful day, I felt the most grown up of all
It was early in the morning and all I heard were screams
I came running to a sight that I couldn’t believe
My grandma lying there, lifeless and pale
Barely words from my mom, all I heard were her wails
Who would’ve thought I’d bring her last cup of tea,
I’d be the last one she’d see, man it sure wasn’t me
At first I stood there in shock of what happened
Then I got it together, took the lead like a captain
I called 911, got my mom out the room
My sister stayed with her, tried to soften her gloom
I did what I could till the medics arrived
Then waited to see if she could be revived
When they came out the room, I feared I already knew
They did all they could but there was nothing they could do
My mother was always one to make me feel whole
But in that moment I realized we had to switch roles
I worked up the courage to tell her the hard truth
And in that moment I felt I was coming out of my youth
I stood with her crying, holding her tight with my hands
And that was a huge step in going from a boy to a man
