MOTH
We were
drawn to a light nobody else saw,
a wandering soul with no compass north,
just the smooth skin of your fingers and hands that shook when you
spoke about your future,
I once told you that some moths never eat after they emerge with
satin wings all wet and sticky and
you told me that if you only had a few weeks to
live you'd give it all up
to see the sunrise one last morning and
that's when i realized there are different kinds of hungry
Our love was not supposed to be loud like this,
with our bodies a slim object that never seemed to gain its own orbit,
a girl is a toy or a joke or a bad driver or
the morning after you wake up and realize
holy god this is why we were put on earth,
it's to worship girls isn't it
We were
never going to clean our rooms no matter how much
you asked us,
we had bigger fights to deal with, our swords as sticks and our horses
old rusty brooms;
even when we grew up and the demons we were killing had realness in them
I never stoppped thinking of ways to save you from them
Our love wasn't supposed to be like this,
we were a romance that forgot to kill one of us.
At the end, we never came up for air,
I told you it's strange to be alive in a time where people are illegal
and you told me that it's strange to love
somebody even though by now we all should know better.
But in the mornings with your hair wild around your head and
your satin skin and your wet lips I thought about moths
and how they agree to give up food for wings and how
you kiss me and
I'm flying.
