Mother
You’ve been there since the beginning,
The start of it all.
When I took my first breath,
And started to crawl.
You taught me how to speak,
And was there when I cried.
You showed me how to dress myself,
And made sure my shoes were tied.
As I grew older,
We grew apart.
I thought I didn’t need you,
That really broke your heart.
You were still there,
Standing by my side,
Through all of my mistakes,
And all the tears you dried.
Yelling and screaming,
We’d fight all the time,
I would never listen to you,
Though you were right every time.
I thought you were just nagging me.
You tried to get me to see,
You were just doing what was best,
Just trying to help me.
You always cared about my well-being,
My safety and my health,
I would roll my eyes at every comment,
With amazing stealth.
You just wanted some respect,
I wanted to be independent and free,
Anything we said,
We could never agree.
Through all of my disrespect,
I got the things I needed,
You gave me everything,
I was so conceited.
Through all of my contempt,
You still tried to teach me,
How to be a good person,
But I just couldn’t see.
I wish I could take it all back,
All the eye rolls and rude comments,
You deserve some respect,
Now I feel so much discontent.
Now that I am older,
And look back at how I behaved,
You were such a great mother,
A mother a lot of kids craved.
I wasted so much time,
Trying to push you away,
I should have thanked you,
At least once everyday.
Thank you for everything you do,
I have finally realized,
You’re the best thing that’s happened to me,
My behavior has been improvised.
I don’t know what time
Or remember the exact day,
When I recognized you deserve the best,
I knew I shouldn’t have pushed you away.
After I realized,
I tried to transform,
No more eye rolling or arguing,
This made your heart warm.
I started saying thank you more,
I should have said it from the start,
You deserve it the most,
I hope it mends, the thing that broke your heart.
I know it is not enough,
You deserve so much more,
But thank you for everything,
You’re the best thing in my life for sure.
