Mother

It is reaching for a hand and realizing no one waits for you-

Yearning for the warmth

That surrounded you once

But no longer.

The sun has fallen.

But you will not.

It is learning to seek contentedness in the inky universe-

On your own but not completely alone;

Closing in on your future but not ready

Not ready

Never ready

To let go of the past.

Longing for the days when she would reach down-

Take your hand

Guide you up the mountaintop and to the stars.

She brought you home safely

In her arms

Shielding you from the bright rays of the cosmos

But now you must make the journey on your own

Touch the heavens with your fingertips

And maybe

Face those great cosmic rays

Looking towards the sun
