Mother's Daughter
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree
And there is a lot of you that I see in me
I crave a love so deep I fear i'll never be fulfilled
And so I fall in love every day so my spirit won't be killed
And like you, everything in life is a spectacle
But unlike you, life has taught me to be skeptical
I see what this world has done to those I love with melanin darker than mine
Where love is candid and hate is a crime
And how women fought for success
But take their dignity off with their dress
And your overbearing emotion is something I see in my self every day
But what drives you and what drives me just isn’t the same
You see the world in a scope and I see it for what it is
A beautiful world we are lucky that even exists
Because not far from us is the ugly truth
Where the sun shines harshly and where they are killing our youth
I am my mother’s daughter. I am unbalanced raw emotion
But I am kin to this land and it has my devotion
