Motivation for Free Expression

Why do we prefer, to be a copy of another,

Why do we choose, to act like each other,

Why not an original, why not to be free,

To have the power to say, 'I am one and only?'

Why can't we have courage, to become our own,

Is it because we're afraid, that we'll end up alone,

That to say 'I am gay,' would have the world treat us cold,

And we'd rather be dead, than to grow up old?

To express ourselves freely, is what we should do,

To make ourselves happy, and to the world we'll be true,

And others will hate you, someone always will,

But it's better to move happy, than to let yourself be still.

And what's sad about the world, is that we try to fit in,

And tear at our true selves, and wear ourselves thin,

That social media says, we need this or need that,

A certain brand of clothes, to be thin and not fat.

And we accept these terms, that we sadly have made,

And we follow the example, of the famous, most paid,

And buy from these stores, expensive, needless things,

Than to buy how we want, and be happy for what life brings.

For if we choose to accept, ourselves happily,

Than we have just made, our free expression free,

And to not care, of the way we are treated,

Than we have left, individuality undefeated.

So no, it doesn't matter, if you are fat or if thin,

It doesn't matter race, your religion, or kin,

It doesn't matter sexual orientation, whether straight or if gay,

All that matters, is free expression every day.

For the people we are with, will soon fade away,

And we will be accepted, for what we are one day,

And that can only come, if the one thing you do,

Is be true to yourself, and to be the real you.

And once we are dead, we will fade into the past,

Our memories forgotten, marks on the world that don't last,

And to make it all worth it, the life we're given to run,

Is to shut out the bad, be happy, and have fun.
