Ms. Plath, Your Darkness Has Brought Me Light.
My influencer is one of volatile desire
Not too quick to step out of line of fire
A figure plagued with complex sorrow
Likely not to see tomorrow
It’s not the poems she wrote that drew my fancy
A single novel, “The Bell Jar,” entranced me
A progressive tale, young girl with a dream
Torn to shreds by mental illness and low self-esteem
A personal life theory I’ve developed from this novel
From one passage particular, I’m about to unravel
Under a fig tree she lay, each fruit bears a future
Fueled with indecision, becomes her own abuser
She thought eating one fig meant leaving the rest
From her fate, the mindset difficult to acquiesce
But light is found within this dark fatality
Her words the clay has molded my own analogy
An aspiring scientist, I’m outside the comfort zone
Lyric design has not been built into this backbone
Embracing new experiences as my friend
And to Plath I wish I could transcend
That tasting multiple figs is sweeter in the end
