Muddy Shoes

I sit there immersed in literature The younger ones aren't at home I can smell the plants preparing For a rain that will never come There has been no moisture The crops scorched and burned The farmers all wait skeptically To, perhaps, see the rain returned But I'll enjoy the smell while we have it With how things are going around here Through this drought, this pleasant smell Never lingers near But suddenly it's darker out And I hear the roar of thunder It's only thunder, in this drought To tease, to make fun, and to shout I hear my father calling me Beckoning me outside You cannot imagine my elation And my clearly shown surprise For it is raining now It's here to end this drought The kittens smell at the fallen water For they've lived their lives without The dark parts start to spread On out back patio And soon all is soaked in water This is so nice to know My brother goes for a walk And I follow suit But I veer off his predicted path And take a familiar route I walk the dry dirt road Now not so dry, at last For now this drought, forever Is only in the past I start at a slow walk Letting the clouds take off a load But I feel such an exhilaration I run down this old dirt road Now I turn around And I start to head back The rain now intensifies And again begins to slack I walk at a steady pace Enjoying the cool air The rain has drenched my clothes The rain has soaked my hair The cooless of the day Adds to the amazing sight I smell the wheat field to my left The corn field to my right The thunder roars and threatens But it's not a threat to me I just walk this old dirt road Just happy to be me A flash of lightning brightens the sky The air has a sweet smell The thunder continues to rumble But it's sound, to me, is sweet as a bell The rain has slackened considerably It will not remain much longer I can see it falling in the distance Making the sensation stronger Now I am filled with joy So happy at the news For I've never been so grateful For dirty, muddy shoes

Wrote this when we finally got rain in North Texas after a summer-long drought.
