Mulan

She loves and respects her father
Wants to be just like him
Her name is Mulan

She joins the military far away
She goes where only men are
She hides her true self from all

Night and Day she fights away
Wonders when it’s going to end
She survives for her family and country

Day breaks
The sunrises
Ready to fight, ready to go
A name is called, her hidden name
Is she going to risk it all
One step forward
Shocking to those around her

In a plane, she goes flying home
She steps off
Bad news comes
Her father is gone
She didn’t even get to say
“Goodbye”

She steps out of the cab
One step, two
She sees her father’s grave

Fresh dirt still mounds the ground
Was the sacrifice worth missing it all
As she stares at the words carved into stone
Memories pass through her mind
The good and the bad

She lays down in bed
Her eyes are closed
A bullet flies by and nearly hits her
She jumps away as a bomb explodes

She can’t move
Struggling, pulling
She jolt’s up in bed
Cold sweat drips from her head
Flashes of war pass through her eyes

She hears the yelling and screams
As blood covers her hands and face
She ducks under the bed for cover
Yelling for help and backup

Her mother comes in
Tries to help her
But nothing can help

Weeks go by
Every little noise
She jumps and flinches
All she sees is war

She can’t stand it any longer
Out the door to the car
She drives to the grave
Where her father stands with his hand out
She walks over and grabs his hand
She heads into the light

There in the ground
Side by side
Two new graves
Dirt piled high
