Musical Smiles

Across the years, I could recall

my father, one way best of all.

Under the light of the living room lamp,

the family sat around and sang.

This was our favorite time of the day,

listening to you play.

I never thought I would see the day,

where the strumming of the strings would vanish;

I did not think the tapping of your feet would stop completely;

or that the sound of your voice would fade.

I did not think of absorbing the moments

when music your music filled our days.

Now, as I am older,

I try my hardest to remember those moments,

when your smile would fill your face,

because it meant there was a new song for you to play.

When I am sad, I remember that dad,

the one with the big musical smiles.

At times, it is sad to say,

that your guitar is the best memory you gave.
