Must We Feel?

What is black?

The dripping loneliness

Of ample emptiness

When your emotions withdraw

What is white?

The blinding heat

Which scalds, scorches, and sears

Through the vacancy

Until you wither

With the pain

Of rekindled feeling

What is grey?

The balance between

Turmoil

And sanity;

A place of contentment given

By the choice between

The warmth

And the chill

Why does it matter?

We are human

Through shame, sentiment, and sympathy

We are animal

Through desire, distress, and despair

We are something in the warmth

We are unknown in the chill
